Google Play Store Reached 700,000 Apps, same as iTunes!

Was there a time when you were a bit envious of iTunes because of the huge number of apps available for iOS devices? Did the words theres an app for that set your teeth on edge? Well no more. Google has announced that there are now around 700,000 apps available to download from the Play Store. This now means that Google can boast it matches Apple, who recently also stated that its iTunes Store has more than 700,000 apps.

Apps make up part of the eco-system which serve mobile devices, both those made by Apple and those powered by Googles Android operating system. Often when choosing between one system or the other, consumers look at the eco-system, which also includes music, films, tv shows and books, to decide if they will buy an iOS or Android powered device.

By attracting software developers to Android, Google is trying to make Apple devices seem less unique and less desirable as the same apps are available for both platforms. Considering the premium price of Apple products this tactic is working as the two companies battle over market share in the $219 billion smartphone industry. In the Android world, Google works with its partners like Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC to actually make the devices, while Google itself concentrates on the OS and the surrounding eco-system.

There are also huge benefits for the app developers. In the last five years, Google and Apple have paid out billions of dollars to app developers, money which has been generated from app sales, from in-app purchases or from advertising.

CyanogenMod 10 Boot Animation Available for Download

Last night the author of the last few CyanogenMod boot animations, 73v1n, graced the world with a completely revamped boot animation for CyanogenMod 10. The CyanogenMod 9 boot animation featured the CyanogenMod mascot, Cid, which seemed to generate a lot of rage from many CM fans. During the bootup process, Cids facial expression changed a bit, looking angry, bad, evil (or bad ass) depending whom you ask. Learning a thing or two since last time, the author decided to completely redo the boot boot animation, removing all traces of Cid, version numbers, and making it as clean as possible.

Since the last time I made one of these, I realized that boot animations should be pretty, but they shouldnt be 30 seconds long and 15MB in size. So this time I made a boot animation thats small and pretty. Its only 2MB for the largest version! Also it doesnt have the version number or a mascot in it. Not that theres anything wrong with CID, I just couldnt find a way to work him in. And haters gonna hate

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean adds Photo Sphere for panoramic shots [video]

The hype surrounding Android 4.2 has indeed been warranted. As we continue to explore the new iteration to the Android OS, new features and improvements continue to be revealed. The latest revelation has been Photo Sphere. This 360-degree panoramic shooting mode is like no other you have seen. The Photo Sphere feature on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean now allows you to snap pictures in every direction while the stitching is automatically done for you. This means that you get to create your own Street View scenarios that you can navigate, share on Google+ and even allow others to enjoy your own creations.

Photo Sphere is essentially an app that is aimed at Apples latest iOS 6 Panorama feature update and Google has done a good job at it. When you take your first shot, Photo Sphere will automatically set the starting point and will give you another point of reference that overlaps with the first. This will go on over and over again until you have the entire scene covered. Once the rendering has been completed, you will have a large scrollable image similar to what you are used to with the Street View in Google Maps.

Due to Hurricane Sandy, Google has canceled the special event that was expected to unveil the Nexus, no doubt with demos on how the Jelly Bean updates fair on the phone. Other features that have come with the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update include Miracast support, a sharing tool similar to iOS AirPlay, a gesture typing feature similar to Swype and support for multiple users on Android tablets.

We have tried out the panorama feature on the iPad and it will obviously be interesting to have this feature on your Android phone. We cant wait to get our hands dirty and create superb panoramic shots using Photo Sphere.

Google Play Gift Cards Support Page Goes Live, More Details Revealed

The moment that many Google Play customers have been waiting for is here, as Google finally made the Stores gift cards official. The support page for the vouchers, which has just gone live, reveals more information that will please those customers in the U.S., but disappoint many outside the country.

The gift cards, as expected, are available in the amounts of $10, $15, $25, and $50 with $2,000 being the maximum amount you can redeem on your Google Play balance. Note that you wont be able to use the gift cards to purchase subscriptions or items from the Devices section, including accessories (chargers, covers, etc.) Likewise, you cant combine the balance with other forms of payment.

Since the gift cards are only available in the U.S., it means they can only be used on apps, games, and other content that is sold in U.S. dollars. So tough luck if youre planning to ask your American friends to buy them for you and use the balance to purchase content in Euro or other currency. The three listed retailers that will be carrying the gift cards are RadioShack, Target, and GameStop.

Excited as we are, we cant help to think that there are a lot of donts and cants that come with the release of the gift cards. But hey, this are still the early days of Google Play gift cards, and were banking on Google to add some international flavors in the near future.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean gets ported to the Nexus S

For an Android phone that was released in 2010, its nothing short of amazing to see how the Nexus S has made the jump from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich, before finally resting on Jelly Bean. Then again, were talking about a Nexus here.

Although Google has announced that the Nexus S wont get updated beyond Android 4.1.2, this inconvenience doesnt seem to deter developers from trying to bring Android 4.2 to the aging phone.

A member of XDA-developers forum by the handle knzo has released a working build of Android 4.2 for the Nexus S. While there are the usual issues and bugs that currently stop the latest flavor of Jelly Bean from becoming a daily driver, the ROM is deemed stable and usable.

Unfortunately, the Android 4.2 ROM has been taken offline by the maker. The developer said that itll be put back up when its ready to be used a daily driver. Check out the original thread for more details and future announcement of when you can test the ROM out on your Nexus S.

International Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean Update Coming Next Week

The international Samsung Galaxy S3 (GT-i9300) will have its update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean launched next week after the companys Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin, Android Central can exclusively reveal. Sources familiar with Samsungs plans inform us that the firmware is in the final stages of testing. The current schedule calls for the release of the international S3 Jelly Bean update shortly after the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event in Berlin, Germany next Wednesday, Aug. 29. Thats the same event at which were expecting to see Samsungs Galaxy Note successor. Following the event, we understand the update will roll out in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom.

As we revealed during our teardown of a leaked Jelly Bean build, the update will introduce familiar Jelly Bean features like the redesigned notification shade and Google Now. In addition, itll include new TouchWiz features like dormant mode for better notification and alert management, as well as easy mode for simplified home screen operation.

As for the U.S. and Canada, we have no information on when the LTE-capable Snapdragon S4-powered Galaxy S3 variants can expect their Jelly Bean update, but were sure Samsung will be just as keen to deliver speedy Android 4.1 upgrades for customers in North America too.

Regardless, international S3 owners should have reason to celebrate in a little over a weeks time, as Samsung turns around a major Android OS update in record time. Google Street View Coming to Google Maps in iPhone Browser Soon

iOS users who have upgraded to iOS 6 or bought an iPhone 5 may suddenly be missing on a lot of Google Maps features previously available in the native app. Fortunately for us Android users, Google is religiously updating Maps for Android with more features and functionalities, such as Street View, turn-by-turn driving directions, public transportation, and the like.

But if youre on iOS 6 or another platform, fret not. Google is still actively maintaining the mobile web version of Google Maps. Yes, thats HTML5, and this means its cross-platform (assuming you have a compatible browser). If youre using an iOS device or any other mobile devices with a capable browser, just fire up mobile Safari and head on to maps.google.com. NY Times David Pogue says its still an acceptable alternative to the native app.

You wont get spoken directions, but youll get written directions, public transportation details, live traffic reports and, of course, Googles far superior maps and data. (In two weeks, youll be able to get Street View this way, too, says Google.)

As an update, Pogue says Google is enabling Street View from mobile web, which might be interesting for folks who want a virtual tour of interesting locations and cities around the world.

Now the question here is this. Facebook earlier eschewed HTML5 as a viable alternative to native apps. Mark Zuckerberg seems to have been very disappointed with the Facebook app on Android, which was essentially HTML5. But mobile web does offer cross-platform compatibility without the headaches associated with parallel development in different platforms.

Will mobile web be good enough for Google and for Google Maps users?

Automatically mount and dismount USB sticks on various devices like the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7.

Various Nexus and stock Android devices do not automatically mount mass storage devices (such as USB sticks). StickMount has been made to solve this problem, and give you access to the files on your USB connected storage from all your apps.

StickMount is known to work on many devices, but is built *only* with *Nexus* devices in mind.

Once StickMount is installed and you connect a USB stick with a USB host / OTG cable, the device will show you a popup if you want to open StickMount. It is advised to tell the device that you want to do this by default.

If you have just installed StickMount and you already had a USB stick connected, you must manually launch the program, or disconnect/reconnect the USB stick for StickMount to start working.

Mass storage devices are mounted to /sdcard/usbStorage/xxxx/.

(Pro) Kill apps preventing unmount

Sometimes an app has a file in use located on the USB device, and wont let go of it. This can prevent StickMount from unmounting the USB device. It will seem like the device stays connected (this is harmless). StickMount Pro provides an option that attempts to kill (terminate) all the apps that are preventing the unmount from succeeding.

(Pro) Media scan

StickMount Pro supports triggering the media scanner on each (un)mount action. This will automatically make the files on your USB device available in apps like Gallery and Music. Please note that the media scanner is not a visible process on all Android devices it might actually work silently in the background without any visual cues. It may take a minute for your files to show up, so dont panic if they dont show immediately.

Even if you have this option enabled, you can prevent folders from being scanned by placing an empty file called .nomedia in that folder. If you put it in the root of the USB device, the entire device will not be scanned.

Filesystem support

The filesystems supported depends on your device firmware. On most devices, at least vfat/fat/fat32 and ext2/3/4 are supported. On the latest Android versions, ntfs is also supported in read-only mode. Some devices also support exfat out the box, but most do not.

StickMount can utilize the ntfs-3g and mount.exfat-fuse binaries to add support for ntfs (untested) and exfat, but these are not included. If you place the ntfs-3g or mount.exfat-fuse files in the root of your internal storage ( /sdcard ), StickMount will automatically use them.
