Samsung gets the upper hand with Apple in Japan

Its not all doom and gloom for Samsung after losing one of the biggest tech cases of the year because they just scored a victory in Japan. A Tokyo court ruled that Samsung did not violate an Apple patent that involved syncing mobile devices and computers. It was obviously the Kies software that Apple was going after.

Samsung said, We welcome the courts decision, which confirmed our long-held position that our products do not infringe Apples intellectual property.

To make matters worse for Apple, Tokyo District Judge Tamotsu Shoji ordered Apple to pay the costs of the lawsuit after his verdict.

Kindle Fire 2 surfaces Leaked Images

Amazon is expected to unveil the follow up to the Kindle Fire next week in New York City. Its also possible they will announce both 7-inch and 10-inch versions. As far as leaked images go, things have been quiet, but The Verge just received one. We cant be positive that this is a 7-inch or 10-inch version, but it does look like a 7-inch based on the scale of the keyboard.

The Verge also received another image, but was asked to not share it. According to them, it shows a streamlined user interface with less chrome.

Unfortunately the picture really doesnt reveal too much. What really matters is the display, processor, and price. As far as the user experience goes, it was never the highlight anyway. We certainly dont expect it to be a full Android experience, but it would certainly be a nice surprise.

Set DNS also checks if your browsing goes via a proxy service that overrides your DNS settings. When network settings change, it will try to access a URL directly using the IP address. If this hits the right server then you have a direct connection to the network. If not, then a proxy is intercepting the connection and is using its own nameserver information.

Proxy testing is turned *off* by default. You can enable it in the preferences.

Set DNS Pro features:
- unlocks the non-root version of the app
- unlocks control widgets so you can view and change your DNS from the home screen
- enables password locking of the settings.

Its hard to not get excited after browsing that list of goodies, but before getting carried away try to remember that flashing this mod comes with all the usual risks, including the possibility of bricking your device (unlikely) and voiding your warranty (guaranteed).

Of course, if youre already running a custom ROM on your Galaxy Nexus, you shouldnt worry about your warranty anymore, so you might as well go ahead and give this a quick try. Or you can wait it out for a week or two and get the official Transformation Pack, including not only these tasty treats, but a whole bunch of others, too. Your choice.

Great for tablets such as the Viewsonic gTablet, Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, ASUS Transformer!

Works great with the Motorola Bluetooth Keyboard and Apple Wireless Keyboard on Xoom and Galaxy Tab 10.1. Honeycomb support for the tablet form factor as well as HDMI out on the Xoom. Works well with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 keyboard dock.

If you are having trouble with the soft keyboard on HTC phones like the Desire HD or Thunderbolt, try changing to another soft keyboard. Seems like the HTC soft keyboard has some issues with BTEP, but other keyboards work fine. Hackers Keyboard is my new favorite keyboard for use with BTEP.

Now includes Frotz and the classic Colossal Cave Adventure game in the enhanced utilities for fun. Busybox has recently been updated to support SMP systems, ie, in top.

Explanation of Permissions:
All permissions used by BTEP are strictly for enabling the functionality of BTEP. BTEP does not contain any analytics, or collect any data.

Network Communication Required so that the shell, SSH, Telnet, and FTP can access the Internet.
Storage So you can manipulate contents of /sdcard/ on your device from the shell.
System Tools Allow user to keep WiFi and/or display active if desired.
Hardware Controls Control vibrator for vibration on cursor keys / virtual DPAD.
System Tools Install Shortcuts, does what it says.

Known issues:
* On Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy S II, SSH has issues with some WiFi routers.

Spirit was initially targetted at custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod, on which FM app availability is limited.

If you dont know what a ROM is, then your phone is likely Stock and un-rooted.

Support for stock, un-rooted devices is now present, but limited, and various bugs are being worked on.

If your stock phone has a working, stock FM app you are happy with, then Spirit may be of little use to you at present.

If your stock phone does not have a working, stock FM app, then FM is likely impossible, except Bionic, Droid 2 & 3, Defy.

Some phones will never work and nobody can make them work because the hardware is disabled. This includes Atrix, Nexus S, US Galaxy S2s, Galaxy Tab, Droid (1)/Milestone, P999 G2x, Galaxy Spica.

I understand the prices may seem high, but this is a niche app. Price experiments say higher prices will keep this app alive & improving.

How many other Real FM apps are on the Market ? Two: 1 for Galaxy S only and one repackaged Motorola app.

Why ? Its extremely difficult. Google does not support FM apps. They and the carriers seem to dislike free Over The Air FM.

Detailed description:

You can choose any folder on the memory card to sync. Currently one-way and two-way sync are supported. Sync intervals and other sync settings can be specified for each sync item you configure. You set up a folderpair to sync and it will automatically keep your files in sync.

Asus brings Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to Transformer Pad Infinity TF700

Though it has taken a while, the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 is getting updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The update started rolling out today, so if you havent seen it yet, you should soon.

Last week we heard that the ASUS Transformer Prime and the Transformer Pad Infinity would be updated that week. While it was true for the Prime, the update for the Infinity Pad was delayed. Luckily, today it is finally beginning to roll out.

When we reviewed the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity back in July, we thought it was a contender for one of the best tablets wed seen yet. With the Infinity getting an update to Jelly Bean, its about to get even better. With Jelly Beans improved performance and elegant visuals, the Transformer Pad Infinitys should feel even faster than it already did.

If you havent been automatically notified of an update yet, it might be worth manually checking for an update by going to Settings > About Tablet > Check For Updates. It could be waiting for you as you read this.

iPad mini release date set for early November, following mid-October announcement?

In addition to the rumored Nexus-branded device(s) expected to hit stores this holiday season we have one more important mobile device thats said to start selling this fall. Naturally, Im talking about Apples unannounced iPad mini, a late arrival at the budget-friendly tablet business, but nevertheless an important player for that niche.

Whether you like it or not, the iPad mini will sell like hot cakes, just like its 9.7-inch brethren, and bring some serious competition to a niche where the Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire versions are kings.

Just as rumored before the iPhone 5 event, Apple did not announce the smaller tablet during its September presser, intentionally delaying the introduction of a new best-selling device.

Now, word on the street via Fortune is that Apple will issue press event invitation for the iPad mini announcement this month. In fact, a sourse says that the press can expect invitations to go out on October 10:

If the rumor is true, and if Apple follows its usual scheduling protocol, that would suggest a special event to unveil the product on Wednesday, Oct. 17, with a launch day of Friday Nov. 2 plenty of time to capture holiday sales.

These details are yet to be confirmed by the company, but well certainly know more in the months to come. However, a November 2 launch would give Apple plenty of time to sell a boatload of iPad minis during the Black Friday and Christmas shopping sprees.

Japanese blog Macotakara, which has been a rather reliable source of Apple-related intel in the past, says that the new iPad is already in production in Brazil and that it doesnt have any confirmation that production is also underway in China:

According to my source, iPad mini was started production in Brazilian factory. I dont have information if it has been produced in Chinese factory, yet.

Well be back with more iPad mini details in the future, mainly because it will be an important addition to the tablet ecosystem and a device Google and every other Android tablet maker should pay attention to in the coming months.
